A Sustainable Festival

It has long been the dream of the Jackeys Marsh Forest Festival organizing committee to hold a sustainable festival. The general idea being that we:

Refuse           Reduce          Reuse         Recycle

This is how we have embodied these principles in the 2010 festival

Refuse
  • to use throw away plates, mugs, glasses and other utensils
  • to allow the use of fossil fuels for festival infrastructure
  • to eat any food not grown in Tasmania
  • to accept that you must have a big PA and bright lights to have fun

Reduce
  • reliance on fossil fuels to get to the festival by riding a bicycle with one of the two groups riding out from Deloraine or by sharing transport with some friends
  • reliance on batteries by using LED torches that generate their own power (some will be available on site for sale)
  • reliance on carbon dense food products – there will be plenty of vegetarian   and local food available
  • energy demand outside peak generation times by using alternatives
  • energy demand by choosing energy efficient lighting and appliances including PA systems

Reuse
  • your own plates, knives forks and spoons which you will bring with you
  • the energy of the sun and water to power the stage lights and PA system

Recycle
  • all human waste generated at the festival from the composting toilets. This will be recycled back into the ground once it has broken down sufficiently
  • any food containers you bring with you. Recycling bins will be available for bottles, cans etc

There will be some workshops on sustainability issues

Solar House design

Powering your house from the sun

How to live without mains power

Building with the earth

Power for the festival will be generated from a mixtre of solar and water power. Experts will be on site to tell you how to do it.

There will be a range of information stalls with the latest environmentally friendly products and explaining the latest sustainable technologies.
